The Grange House Extension and Remodelling, Edinburgh
A contemporary zinc-clad extension to a grand four-storey Victorian house in Edinburgh’s Grange Conservation Area.
Set on a stepped site, the existing house had a fragmented layout. The kitchen and dining areas—tucked away on the north-facing lower ground floor—felt cut off from the rest of the home. Accessed by a narrow service stair and with only a single door to the garden, the space suffered from limited natural light and a poor connection to the outdoors.

Our design introduces a bold, split-level zinc-clad extension that bridges old and new. It creates a series of dynamic new spaces, including a study, a library mezzanine, and a dramatic double-height living area lined in birch ply, projecting beyond the original rear wall. Generous glazing, rooflights, and high-level windows bring daylight deep into the plan and open up views to the garden.
With planning and warrant consents secured, the first phase of remodelling works commenced Spring 2025.
