Contemporary House, Colinton, Edinburgh
Jefcoate Anderson Architects were appointed to design this four-bedroom, two storey family home set in the heart of Edinburgh’s Colinton conservation area, within the grounds a Category B listed, early 20th century, Arts and Crafts villa,
Contemporary design within sensitive locations often attracts strong opinions and this project was no different, splitting local opinion and attracting similar numbers of letters of support and objection.
Despite the strong objections, City of Edinburgh Council were supportive and planning consent was granted in June 2020, with the planning officer describing the proposals as;
‘’a high-quality contemporary design that would create a juxtaposition between the historical and new. The design concept would contribute towards a sense of place through the interest created by the contrasting architectural themes between it and the existing property.’’
The contemporary design is finished externally with white render and larch cladding. The house enjoys excellent levels of insulation and airtightness, triple glazed alu-clad windows, and benefits from the adoption of renewable technologies including solar panels and an air source heat pump.
