Golf Clubhouse 2, Royal Dornoch Golf Club
Royal Dornoch Golf Club invited Jefcoate Anderson Architects to undertake a feasibility study for a new golf club house, integrated with the existing The Royal Golf Hotel. This followed the club membership deciding not to build a new clubhouse on the site of the existing clubhouse.
We set about designing a high quality and elegant contemporary addition to the existing hotel which efficiently integrates the requirements and facilities of both the golf club house and hotel.
The proposal is arranged over two levels linked by a stone and glass rotunda enclosing a lift and stair. The upper ‘Hotel’ level comprises the main hotel entrance, reception, restaurant and bar, museum link, administration areas and kitchen facilities. The lower ‘Golf Course’ level comprises the main golfers’ entrance, pro shop, locker rooms and bag/trolley storage.
In addition to serving a functional purpose, the rotunda- topped with the historic club house clock- also serves as a key focal point and announces the presence of the main golfer’s entrance.
The natural stonework of the rotunda and lower ground level helps to root and integrate the building into the surrounding landscape. The appearance of the lower floor level and rotunda are further softened by the existing grass banking and some terraced planting.
