House Extension in Romanno Bridge, Scottish Borders

Our clients didn’t like the dark interior of their existing house and the issue that once you came in the front door, you were detached from the stunning front and rear gardens with just small window openings through which you could glimpse the outdoors.  The cold, dark, dining room was in the opposite corner of the house from the kitchen and a dedicated home office was required.

By removing a small first floor bedroom, we created a double height space in the centre of the house. We also removed a dark entrance lobby. Now when you come in the front door, you get a view right through the property on both the ground floor and through the large glazed gable on the first floor.

The kitchen was moved from the front of the house to the rear and a new dining area behind a frameless glass wall now means the garden has to be kept in top condition.

We used two types of Scottish Larch cladding board to provide interest to the elevations. A saw cut board on board finish to the main first floor elevations, with a planed, tongue and groove board to the gable and the ground floor timber clad walls.

The first floor overhangs the ground floor glazing with the overhang being calculated to keep direct sunlight off the floor to ceiling glass in the summer months. It also provides some shelter from the Scottish weather should you wish to sit outside when it’s raining.

The first floor bathroom and en-suite were also completely stripped out, the wall between them moved to provide more space to the en-suite and reinstalled using tiles and sanitaryware from Porcelanosa.
